Moving from the brick and mortar, the other-guy-owns-the-building, world, left me with breathtaking exhilaration. I was free! I was also terrified.
There's definitely something to be said about “a regular paycheck” which we usually take to mean “secure.” We can sleep easy at night. Why? Because we know it's going to be there. Or we feel confident it's going to be there anyway. We don't have to worry about it.
So why was I terrified at working from home? Because for the most part making a decent enough wage means being an independent contractor. Meaning I'm my own boss. Meaning I have to worry about paying the employee: me. I have to figure out where the next job is coming from. I have to sell/seal the deal. I have to deal with taxes/unemployment insurance/workers compensation. etc. me. Insecurity.
What keeps me awake at night is how am I going to take care of this employee? Pay them? Help them with medical coverage, disability insurance, child care, elder care, furthering education…what ever all else it is they feel they need?
*sits back in chair, sighs *
So what keeps you awake at night? Whatever it is it affects our work. Come share. Maybe we can help each other. Maybe just getting it off your chest will help.
