  1. You're on Your Own. Telecommuting is a very isolating career choice. You don't have a group of people you have commonality with. There isn't a boss prompting you to get going. You rarely have any kind of support team to help you if you get stuck and, when you have computer troubles, you are unable to complete your work, unless you happen to be a techno-guru that can fix everything that goes wrong.

    The successful telecommuter will be highly self-reliant, enjoy solving problems, and will make the most of all available resources. However, the successful telecommuter also knows how to ask the experts. Becoming a telecommuter doesn't require you to reinvent the wheel. Countless people have come before you and been successful; learn from their experiences, successes, and failures.

  2. Your Friends Think You're Nuts. When you first make the decision to work from home, your friends and family may be less than supportive about your decision. They are accustomed to traditional work choices, and they have all heard about the scams that are so prevalent on the Internet. So, when you announce your choice to work from home, you are often met with disbelieving stares and concerned pats on the back that are less than helpful when you are already feeling insecure about your decision.

    The successful telecommuter will be undaunted by the doubts of others. Having a strong sense of self belief and can-do attitude is essential to making your choices work in your favor. When you apply yourself diligently and creatively, your friends and family will soon change from detractors to your biggest supporters.

  3. Jobs Are Hard to Find. Weeding through the many work-at-home scams may be a daunting task and you may find yourself falling into the trap of believing that there is no such thing as a real work from home job. If you aren't sure exactly how to find or create work at home jobs, you may find yourself frustrated and angry with the whole thing, before you've ever really had the chance to do something about it.

    When it comes to telecommuting success, patience and persistence is the name of the game. If you believe in yourself, have equipped yourself with the best resources and information, and have assessed your strengths, you will find work. It may take time. It may be frustrating. But, if you keep up your focused and informed search and plan of action, you will be successful.

  4. Your Skills Are Limited. Being your own boss means that you are the only one around that can handle all the aspects of running your business. You have to wear all the hats, and that can drive anyone batty!

    Being a successful telecommuter often means turning a seeming negative into a positive. Rather than focusing solely on your weaknesses, every good telecommuter begins by assessing your overall abilities. When you can discover both your strengths and weaknesses, you can begin to plan for your success.

    Often this means highlighting your strengths while addressing any weakness (e.g., through schooling, additional headcount, or resources) as quickly as possible. Wearing all the hats in your company can be overwhelming, but it can also be a great opportunity for you to learn how to become a better person, both in and out of the office.

With all these pitfalls in front of you, before you even begin, it is no wonder that so many people give up before they give themselves a real chance to explore their career choice. If you are like the many other terrific and talented people out there, don't give up before you ever begin. Realize that anything worth having in life takes work. You can do it!
